Preparing for a battle, the players see nothing but still space and a large ship. This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. I figured I would do a post a day for the next few days to share. The possibilities are almost endless.I have some time this weekend to post some thing's I've been working on for my campaign. Need a reason for players to go to some Moradin-forsaken rogue asteroid looking for a rumored artifact? Have the agents of the Bank of Discord send them there in return for forgiving the extra fees on their delinquent payment for their spelljamming helm. It was last seen on its way to a new construction project though it never arrived. This could easily translate to a SJ campaign.
This meant we were constantly worried about the bank breathing down our necks about payments, threatening to repo our jump drive. In every Traveller campaign I was in the players almost never owned the ship free and clear. But that could be a great hook/player motivation for the DM. Maybe I'm getting bogged down in "realism", but the main reason for a spelljamming ship to exist is for commerce, although that will probably be just a minor part of the player's lives in most campaigns. With a helm the ship becomes a huge profit-maker and that should be factored into the cost. Without a helm the ship is pretty useless and without a ship the helm is useless. Ship construction would not really be that expensive so the actual ship itself, while a considerable cost, wouldn't be what cost the most.
By ships I really mean the spelljamming helm. My tendency would be to make ships way more expensive than any other (well, almost any other) magical item.
